Espiritu Santo Island has much to offer, from beautiful sandy beaches, dramatic cliff faces and mangroves full of birds and turtles, and a great way to explore this island is by kayak. Leaving from La Paz in the morning, we will make the hour-long boat journey to Espiritu Santo Island where we will begin our adventure-packed day.
After an introduction to sea kayaking, we will spend the morning paddling around the island, enjoying the beauty and nature of this archipelago. We will then stop at one of the many beautiful beaches for our lunch break.
For the next part of the adventure we will make our way to the whale shark sanctuary to swim with these enigmatic animals. Between late October and May, juvenile whale sharks gather near La Paz. The northerly winds experienced during this time of year pushes nutrient-rich water from the Gulf of California into the shallow bay of La Paz where plankton blooms, creating an enticing feeding habitat for these enigmatic, filter-feeding sharks.
Once in the Protected Whale Shark Area we will start looking for the tell-tale signs of an animal swimming nearby. We will also give a brief introduction to the natural history of the sharks, and answer questions about both the animals and what to expect from the experience.
Once we spot a shark, we put on all our gear, and slide in the water to swim alongside them. Sometimes, we can even swim with several sharks at once. If possible, we take identification pictures of each shark to help with the population monitoring that goes on in the Bay. Once we finish this activity, we make our way back to La Paz.
The trip begins at 08:00 am and returns to La Paz at approximately 16:30 in the afternoon. You will be provided with all your kayak and snorkel gear, including a full wetsuit, refreshments and lunch on the island, as well as a bilingual guide.
